Given the risk associated with wildfire, why would anyone start a fire on purpose? Fire has always been a natural feature of the prairie landscape, and a controlled burn is one of the most effective ways to avoid the massive destruction of uncontrollable wildfire. It's also one of the only feasible ways to control encroachment of woody plants into grassland during drought conditions. Species like sage will out-compete native forage species and cattle will not eat them, which increases forage demand on the remaining areas of grassland. A controlled burn will not only maintain the forage productivity of the range, it will mitigate the potential for wildfire by reducing the available fuel load.
